Information on Malaysian Highways

The success of the development of the North – South Expressway (NSE), the first privatised highway in the country that was officially fully opened in 1994, has led to an increasing number of privatised highways throughout Malaysia. Demand for more highways grew as the many highway safety features and facilities have helped to reduce road accidents, costs and travel time and at the same time, spurred unprecedented boom in economic activities along the highway routes. There are currently 30 highways in Malaysia, measuring more than 1,000 kilometres.

Jambatan Pulau Pinang (JPP) was the first highway toll bridge opened in the country. With its distinctive designs and features, JPP has won many awards, including the Grand Award in the United States of America Engineering Excellence Competition in 1986 and the FIABCI Special Award in 1993. It also picked up an award for transportation structures from the UK in 2006 as well as a Supreme Award for Engineering Excellence.

Private highways in Malaysia have won many accolades, such as the best Architectural Design Award and Best Buildable Design Award given to Lebuhraya Malaysia – Singapura Lintasan Kedua (LINKEDUA). The UN Habitat Scroll of Honour Award has also been bestowed upon Lebuhraya SMART (SMART) in Kuala Lumpur for its management and easing of peak hour traffic in mitigating flood in KL areas. The Sungai Perai Bridge under Lebuhraya Lingkaran Luar Butterworth (LLB) meanwhile won the Institute of Structural Engineers, UK, (ISTRUCTE) double awards, namely best Transportation Structures award and the Supreme award for best structure among all categories for its innovation, eye-catching design and fine details in 2006.
